STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESSFUL COMMUNICATION: OCTOBER 26

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Aloha PWN Members!

This year has been flying by! I am an organized person and I work hard at getting everything I need accomplished, but then when your body gets run down it is just so hard to get some of those final touches done. So I apologize for missing the September message.

I do want to remind you that the end of the year isn’t that far away.  It is a time to ponder how this year went, what we want for next year and to make those moves. As president of the Professional Women’s Network, 2006 has been awesome! My reign is coming to an end in just two months and you will be receiving your ballots soon to determine who will be on our 2007 Board of Directors.

I would like to thank those of you, and especially our new members, who have stepped up to the plate. The BOD positions may sound like a lot of work, but working together makes it easier than having only a few do two or three jobs.

We had to find someone a little earlier for our PR position. A big mahalo goes to Katey Bailey with Dave and Buster’s for volunteering to take on the job when Lorraine Faithful had to step down due to the closing of the organization for which she was Executive Director, Sisters Offering Support. After some serious consideration, Lorraine felt it was time to be near her aging parents in Florida. I know that, seeing how my own parents have aged over the years and how grateful I am that I am here with them in Hawaii, I would miss out on so much and have many regrets if I was not here with them.

Please follow in Katey’s footsteps. Participate! Jump in and ask to help. You don’t have to have an official title to be needed. We can always use help and support!

I hope to see you at the Oct. 26 luncheon and the Nov. 11 Spa Day and the Dec. 3 Holiday brunch.

Much aloha,

Audrey Hutton

President

¨       Audrene suggested switching to Bankoh from FHB because of online access fee. FHB refuses to waive fee. Motion to change banks received unanimous approval.

¨       A discussion on bank account access was held. It was confirmed that the President, VP, and Treasurer will continue to have authorization to sign checks. It was also decided that Audrene & Carol should both have online access to the accounts. If/when Carol is no longer E.D., a new vote will be taken to determine if the new E.D. should have online access. Motion made and unanimously approved.

¨       Audrene still needs to confer with Elaine to balance the income vs liability statement.

Arrangements:

¨       Luncheon rate increase discussed and Hale Koa menu with new prices distributed. Motion made and passed unanimously to increase member luncheon rates to $21, sponsored guest rates to $30 and other guests to $35. Our last contractual luncheon is November 2006. They have offered to kill the construction noise during our luncheons, but will understand if we need to move to another venue. Marie suggested that we find a new locale with would attract and retain more members; one that is more centrally located and has free parking. ¨       Barbara asked about possibility of making changes to spruce up site. Amber suggested having slide show type of presentations on site. Discussion followed. Keep site as simple and user-friendly as possible and not add fluff. Carol agreed that some changes should be made to update site, but time is a problem. Time-consuming enough just to get new members listed. Marie expressed concern about lack of password protection due to personal member information archived on site. A brief discussion acknowledged that these are strange times, but most of us don’t really care whether strangers know that we traveled to see family or got a job promotion, etc.

New Business:

¨       Ballot for 2007 BOD election to be completed no later than Oct. 20 and distributed at the October luncheon.

Next board meeting:  October 12, 2006, Pacific Club, at noon.

Editor’s Notepad:
It’s amazing how an event, a song, an aroma, or a certain food can conjure up a memory from a long time ago and make it seem like then is now. Sometimes the memory is one we would rather forget. When the earthquakes hit on October 15, a bad memory that had been lying dormant in my brain came rushing back to the surface. It was suddenly 6:01 a.m., February 9, 1971 again. I was awakened by a thunderous noise. The house was rock ‘n’ rollin.’ But this was Hawaii, not L.A. and this was 2006. I’d been here before. The 6.6er in the San Fernando Valley lasted forever or so it seemed. We lost power and telephone service. There were no cell phones to get all jammed up in 1971. Neighbors stood in the street, some afraid to go back in their homes. Swimming pools were emptied of half their water. Everything creaked and groaned and cracked. And then it shook again … and again … and again. For months, aftershocks whitened our knuckles wherever we happened to be at the moment. There is nothing normal about the ground moving under your feet. It is a helpless feeling and it’s what we all experienced shortly after 7 a.m. here on Oahu this October 15.

Here on Oahu we’ll be able to tuck our earthquake experiences away. Spoiled food, candlelight meals, and driving around without any stop lights will be the extent of our adventure. However, our friends and neighbors on the Big Island will not be as fortunate. They will want to forget but they won’t be able to. It will especially affect the children who are around 10 – 12 years of age. They seem to be the ones who are the most frightened. And, they will be the ones who will still grip the table or arms of their chairs when the ground moves again some 35 years later.

If you know any children on the Big Island, spend some time listening to them tell of their ordeal. They need to talk about the earthquakes.

Maybe I needed to talk about it too.

Aloha,

Alternate Past-President Advisor

BARBARA GUSS (Adecco) was a poll worker at her precinct for the Primary election and will do the same again for the General election on November 7. Barbara says, “I always enjoy meeting my neighbors and others in our community during the vote time. We all got a laugh when Senator Fred Hemmings came to vote with two of his small grandchildren who wanted to watch 'Papa' cast his vote. One of the children left an elaborate Lego toy creation in the booth. At least, we surmised it was from Fred and troupe, as there had been no other small children in the booths during that time frame. Later in the day, when Fred's wife, Lydia, came to vote, we all teased that Fred had left his toy in the booth. She recognized the Legos and said, yes, it did indeed belong to one of the grandsons and she would happily take it home with her. Please don't miss the opportunity to participate in this democratic process which makes our country what it is. Yes, even your one vote counts!  And, other PWN member, Louise Wooden (Accessories to Go), was also a poll worker. We enjoyed catching up in between lines of voters.”

DEBORAH KIRK (ReMax Honolulu) has a really good contact for any of us who need an excellent repairman for jobs, big or small. He’s a second generation renovation specialist and belonged to the union in Canada. He has the gift to make the dysfunctional functual, and is the king of innovative cost-cutting ideas. He’s honest, direct, reliable, and professional; has references, and offers a senior discount. Known as the “House Whisperer,” his real name is Andrew Kirk. You can reach Andrew at 721-8863. And, yes – they’re related. J

NATALIE IWASA (Natalie J. Iwasa, CPA, Inc.) and her sons, Orion (7) and Asa (3) formed Team Iwasa. Team Iwasa completed the 25-mile segment of the Honolulu Century Bike Ride on Sunday, September 24 with flying colors. Orion surprised the team by riding eight miles on his own and helped out on the crucial hill heading toward the Hawaii Kai Golf Course. When’s the next ride?

LYNN GREINER (Happy Hawaii Homes) started a real estate investment business, Coconut Investments, Inc. and is finding lots of below-market investment condos that she would be happy to pass on to an interested PWN member. Currently, she has uncovered a luxury condo fixer that will be worth $200K more after minor fixing and cleanup. She’s keeping this one to herself, though. Right now, Lynn and her husband Rob are taking a cruise on the Pride of Hawaii to celebrate their 28th wedding anniversary. Here’s to 28 more, Lynn!

MINDY ASH (Hawaii Hypnosis Center) has returned to PWN. Mindy has changed careers and wanted us to all know that she is now certified by Smoke Free International as a Smoking Cessation Specialist Hypno-therapist and by the International Hypnosis Federation as a Smoking Cessation Specialist. She is also recognized by the International Hypnosis Federation as a Certified Hypno-therapist. Mindy is enabling smokers to stop smoking for life. She can do this in one hour and give you a lifetime nonsmoking guarantee. Great work, Mindy!

AMBER RICCI (Amber Net) reminds us to mark our calendars for Saturday, October 28 and the Third Annual Big Hairy Monster Ball. Amber is expecting 150 to 200 costumed people at her Portlock estate for the best party of the year and the best way to raise money for breast cancer awareness. For more information, contact Amber at 550-0331.

PAM HERRINGTON (Platinum Mortgage Partners) attended the Hawaii Chapter of the Certified Fraud Examiners Association meeting with Natalie Iwasa (Natalie J. Iwasa, CPA Inc.) Both Natalie and Pam found the group interesting with a much diversified group of professionals in attendance. Natalie and Pam were invited to join the professional association. They are now the newest members of the group. When the group meets every other month, as part of the meeting, they have a presentation speaker at lunch and then immediately following, a two-hour continuing education class is provided. These are very comprehensive presentations on fraud and the makings of the fraud detection including compliance were the most recent topics.

ELAINE HAMMOND (Molokai Properties Limited) informs us that Weekenders is empowering women to live their lives on their own terms; to create their own schedules; to express their unique fashion sense; and to make a difference in the lives of others – all via an exclusive, trend-setting fashion opportunity. We can learn more by attending one of Weekenders “Empowering Women” events: Tuesday, October 24, 6 p.m. at the Waikiki Yacht Club (boardroom) – Waikiki end of Ala Moana Park; or at AAUW House, 1802 Keeaumoku Street on Saturday and Sunday, November 4 & 5at 2 p.m. For more information, contact Elaine Hammond: elainemyham@juno.com

LOUISE WOODEN (Accessories to Go)didn’t feel the earthquakes because she was on the mainland at the PSI World’s High Valley Ranch where she joined her daughter, Dr. Diane Wooden, for an active and informative week at the Principia Seminar for graduates of the Leadership Seminars.

SEPTEMBER LUNCHEON RECAP

by Biz Kellam, Century 21 All Professional

On September 28, Life Coach Susan Kim presented Professional Women’s Network members and guests with a valuable overview of her “Take Action Toolkit,” – a workbook designed to get you organized and motivated to expand your business through referrals.

According to Kim, the first step in developing a referral basis in your business is defining what you want to be known for –  the purpose of your business. Considering what benefits you offer your clients, how you stand out from your competition, and why your business is necessary all play in to identifying YOU.

Once you have identified your purpose: develop a “60 Second Elevator Speech.” This is a quick, attention-getting blurb that tells people who you are and what you offer in a concise format.

The very core to generating referrals is building relationships with clients and contacts. It is essential to get to know their businesses so you can anticipate their needs, add value to their products and services, and refer business to them.

Susan Kim also quoted Dr. Ivan Misner’s  (founder of BNI) “Giver’s Gain” which states that the more you give to others, the more you will receive in return.

Finally, Kim stressed the need to ASK for the referrals. If you don’t ask, how can people know you want and appreciate the business? If you’re not open about what you want, people may assume you don’t need any more business and will send their referrals elsewhere.

And, always thank your sources to let them know you appreciate their help in growing your business.

OCTOBER 26, 2006 LUNCHEON

Annabel Chotzen – Life Coach

“Strategies for Successful Communication”

Annabel Chotzen has been a corporate trainer and award-winning motivational speaker for more than 12 years. She has delivered presentations to thousands of people at conventions, meetings, and seminars in Hawaii and on the mainland. Holding a Master Degree in Public Administration from Harvard University, Annabel has been a professor of Business Communications at the University of Hawaii School of Business and Hawaii Pacific University. She has worked in leadership positions in both the private and public sectors.

One of the biggest problems today is that people do not really know how to communicate with coworkers and customers. An enormous amount of time, energy, and money is wasted when employers and/or employees do not communicate clearly.

Good communication skills do not come naturally to many people, but they can easily be learned and then used right away.

Simply stated, there is nothing more important for everyone in your company to learn than effective communication strategies.

Join us at our October 26 luncheon meeting when Annabel Chotzen will share five of the most important strategies for successful communication. Please bring a guest and your business cards.
